Benedict Cumberbatch is playing a terrorist known simply as John Harrison, but most people believe that is just a front name for his true identity–Khan. J.J. Abrams is notoriously known for these kind of shenanigans, that’s in part why we love him so much. Still, this is a bit annoying.
“I play John Harrison who’s a terrorist and an extraordinary character in his own right,” the Brit said. “He’s somebody who is not your two-dimensional cookie cutter villain. He’s got an extraordinary purpose, and I hope that at one point or other in the film you might even sympathize with the reasons he’s doing what he’s doing — not necessarily the means and the destruction he causes. But it was a great ride, not just because he’s the bad guy and the antagonist but also because he has a purpose and it’s hard not to see his point of view at certain points.” via Access Hollywood
It makes sense that Cumberbatch isn’t playing Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness, because Alice Eve‘s character Dr. Carol Marcus meets Khan for the first time while she is working on a project with her son, David, after she is already estranged from her husband, Kirk. So far, Kirk and the good doctor have not begun a relationship and they definitely do not have a son, so Khan simply does not fit into the typical time-frame. Not yet, at least. That means that Star Trek 3 (oh you know there is one coming) will have Khan as the antagonist.
Star Trek Into Darkness releases in theaters nationwide on May 17, 2013 in 2D, 3D, and IMAX.
